POSITION TITLE: Community Recreation Coordinator

JOB CLASSIFICATION: Permanent Full-time

HOURS OF WORK: 35.0 hours per week

JOB SUMMARY: You will be responsible for the development and implementation of leisure/recreation services for residents between the ages of 18 – 65 with a mental disorder in the Fanning, Garrison, Glamorgan and Bethany Care Society Continuing Care Centres.

You will primarily work within two (2) centres as a team member of both the Continuing Connections Alberta Health Services partnership team and the Canadian Mental Health Community Transitions team.


  • Recreation Therapy designation preferred and/or Registered Professional Member of ATRA.
  • A recognized diploma or undergraduate degree in a human services area.
  • You have worked in the mental health field for over two (2) years and have a deep commitment to and understanding of the recovery model. You demonstrate deep respect not only for clients but for the teams you support, your peers and community partners.
  • Two (2) years of experience in working with individuals with mental health/addiction conditions and complex medical needs in a care facility, or an equivalent combination.
  • Experience working in an interdisciplinary setting.
  • Experience in group facilitation is an asset.
  • Professional competencies such as assessment, intervention/treatment planning, supervision/leadership to a therapy team, critical thinking, judgment, documentation, research, evaluation, program development, case management, etc.
  • First Aid and CPR certifications.
  • Valid driver’s license and a vehicle.
  • Availability to work one evening per week when required.

Client Service Responsibilities:

  • Plan, implement, and evaluate the recreation component of the overall program for the four (4) Care Centres for the under 65 years of age group.
  • Facilitate the Art of Friendship and Art of Recovery groups.
  • Engage clients to identify recreation goals and link them to their community, matching them with a peer/volunteer or to programming to meet recreation needs.
  • Advocate for program clients and promote recovery and their inclusion in their community.
  • Provide education sessions and act as a referral resource to the care centre staff and clients.
  • Train, supervise and recognize program volunteers and oversee practicum students as required.
  • Attend monthly program supervision and team meetings.
  • Participate in the overall functioning, coordination and development of the Continuing Connections Program, in partnership with key stakeholders.
  • Build therapeutic relationships.
  • Shadow/train various positions on the Community Transition team to provide relief as needed (at least 2 times a year).
  • Maintain database records and statistics, monitor program budget, and assist in the preparation of annual reports and funding submissions as required.
  • Administer the Recovery Assessment Scale (RAS) tool to identify client strengths and monitor client success.
  • Participate in the evaluation of program outcomes.
