Canadian Mental Health Association, Calgary Region builds awareness and provides education and support for individuals and families living with a mental health condition, addiction, or a loss by suicide. We provide community-based support programs, including post discharge/supportive living, street outreach, suicide bereavement and family support counselling therapy, and peer support programs for families and individuals.

We work closely with other community organizations to assist in bridging gaps in the mental health care system and facilitate access to important services and resources. POSITION TITLE:              Recovery Trainer – Leisure Recreation                                            

JOB STATUS:                   1.0 FTE 

HOURS:                              35 hours per week with flexibility.  Some Evening work required for this role 

SUMMARY:                       The Recovery Trainer is responsible for the delivery of evidenced-based skills, educational workshops and interventions, using a recovery focused approach to a variety of target groups, but primarily focused on engaging individuals in Leisure/Rec activities.

Sessions will support resiliency and build confidence and increased knowledge of mental health.  The position will work collaboratively with trained Peer Support Workers, providing increased access for individuals, youth and families needing informal and formal resources and support. 


  • An undergraduate degree in a social service Recreation, health, education field.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of issues relating to supporting people with lived experience of mental health and/or addiction.
  • Three (3) years of experience working in the mental health/addiction sector, with a deep commitment to and understanding of the recovery model.
  • Understanding and experience working within a peer support model.
  • Strong knowledge of current recreation trends with ability in program design, implementation and evaluation.
  • Lived experience of a mental health and/or addiction issue would be considered an asset.
  • Knowledge and experience in group/classroom facilitation and experience with a broad audience, with a special focus on Leisure Recreation.
  • Knowledge and experience in prevention, engagement, and promotion in mental health, demonstrating strong collaborative and relationship skills with key stakeholders.
  • A passion for delivering recovery orientated services.
  • Cultural competency in working with diverse groups.
  • Valid driver’s license and a vehicle.
  • Current First Aid | CPR certifications an asset. 

Client Service Responsibilities:

  • Provide recovery based workshops and deliver recreation sessions to adults, youth and family members in the CMHA Recovery College and in the community.
  • Provide group recovery and skills training sessions for people living with mental health and/or addiction in the CMHA Recovery College.
  • Research, tailor and design curriculum, ensuring they meet target population and community need, in collaboration with Peer Support Workers and Recovery College learners.
  • Co-facilitate sessions, courses and drop in groups across all four quadrants of the city.
  • Promote the recovery philosophy and empower people with skills to become part of a supportive and engaged community.
  • Participate in coalition building and networking with community groups and individuals to further the recovery movement through a community development model.
  • Assist with the development of engagement strategies with hard to reach and underserved groups including but not limited to; youth, seniors and ethno-cultural groups.
  • Compile appropriate and meaningful community resources for group participants.
  • Actively engages learners in our Welcome and Recovery Centres and broader community to identify specific issues and provide supports related to: Socialization in the community/reducing isolation, physical health and wellness, harm reduction, meaningful activity, and building self-esteem.
  • Expectations to become familiar with Agency processes including service delivery and resulting data collection through the electronic system.


  • Ability to create a safe environment.
  • Ability to research and create courses and sessions to meet community and population specific needs in collaboration with Peer Support Workers.
  • Excellent public speaking, group facilitation, training and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to use outcomes data training sessions to drive and improve services.
  • Experience supporting youth, indigenous or ethno-cultural groups considered an asset.
  • You are a self-starter and are able to apply a critical lens to program delivery and design.
  • Work using a community development lens in program delivery.
  • A deep commitment to, and understanding of, the recovery model, harm reduction philosophy, strengths based and empowerment approach.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.
