POSITION TITLE:              Recovery Trainer (Family Support)

JOB STATUS:                    Full-Time Permanent

HOURS:                              Daytime and Evening Work required

SUMMARY:                       The Recovery Trainer is responsible for the delivery of recovery orientated workshops to a variety of target groups, but primarily focused on supporting caregivers and family members of those caring for a loved one living with a mental health or addiction challenge. Workshops are designed to increase knowledge of recovery and trauma, improve help-seeking and independent living skills and instill belonging to the community. The position will work collaboratively with trained Family Peer Support Workers, providing increased access for families needing informal and formal resources and support.


  • An undergraduate degree in a social service, health or education field.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of issues relating to supporting people with lived experience of mental health and/or addiction.
  • Three (3) years of experience working in the mental health/addiction sector, with a deep commitment to and understanding of the recovery model.
  • Understanding and experience working within a peer support model.
  • ASIST training or previous experience working with people in crisis or experiencing suicidal feelings is considered an asset.
  • Group facilitation/trainer certification or considerable experience.
  • Knowledge and experience in prevention, engagement, and promotion in mental health.
  • A passion for delivering recovery orientated services.
  • Lived experience of a mental health and/or addiction issue or supporting a loved one, would be considered an asset.
  • Access to a reliable vehicle (delivery of workshops across the city).

 Client Service Responsibilities:

  • Provide recovery based workshops for family members and caregivers supporting a loved one with an addiction or mental health in the CMHA
    Recovery College.
  • Research, tailor and design curriculum, ensuring they meet target population and community need, in collaboration with Peer Support Workers
    and Recovery College learners.
  • Promote the recovery philosophy and empower people with skills to become part of a supportive and engaged community.
  • Participate in coalition building and networking with community groups and individuals to further the recovery movement through a community
    development model.
  • Assist with the development of engagement strategies with hard to reach and underserved groups including but not limited to; youth, seniors and
    ethno-cultural groups.
  • Compile appropriate and meaningful community resources for group participants.
  • Deliver courses and groups primarily in the evening across the City.


  • Ability to create a safe environment for family members and caregivers.
  • Ability to research and create courses to meet community and population specific needs in collaboration with Peer Support Workers.
  • Excellent public speaking, group facilitation, training and communication skills.
  • Experience supporting youth, families or ethno-cultural groups considered an asset.
  • You are a self-starter and are able to apply a critical lens to program delivery and design.
  • Work using a community development lens in program delivery
  • A deep commitment to, and understanding of, the recovery model, harm reduction philosophy, strengths based and empowerment approach.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.
