The Community Education program
works to break through the stigma related to mental
illness and promote mental health and wellness through
a variety of presentations on topics such as mental
illness, stigma, stress and suicide awareness.
Presentations are available for adult groups as well
as junior and senior high schools, and are offered
in an age-appropriate, interactive format with accompanying
resource materials and community contact information.
Presentations are free to students only. Other presentations
that are provided do have a fee.
Presentations
The Stigma of Mental Illness: 1 in
5 Calgarians will experience a mental illness at some
point in their life, yet everyday Calgarians suffer
in silence. With this presentation the silent barriers
are broken. Students will not only learn the signs
and symptoms of mental illness, but also hear first
hand what it’s like to live with a mental illness
through the story of a volunteer educator.
Youth and Coping with Stress: 1
in 6 Canadians have thought about suicide when under
stress. Clearly stress management is a life skill
that all people should have in their back pocket.
This presentation does just that. By assessing their
own stress and trying out some coping techniques,
students are empowered with tools to manage their
stress.
Suicide Awareness: The Suicide Education
service helps prevent suicide through comprehensive
awareness building in the community. The sessions
target suicide stigma and create a better understanding
of this important issue by covering topics like myths,
warning signs, as well as how and where to turn for
help. Presentations are available for adult groups,
businesses, educational institutions, non-profit agencies
and otherwise.
