The Legend: Dallas Williams Memorial Golf Tournament – Full Circle Foundation’s Story

Dallas was an avid, and competitive golfer, and was truly at peace on the golf course. In the midst of dealing with the intense grief of losing our friend and brother to suicide in 2015, we struggled to find a way out of the darkness and searched for a way to create something positive out of devastating tragedy. Hosting a memorial golf tournament aimed at raising funds as well as awareness about suicide and mental health, seemed like a perfect fit! Dallas is the reason that we started the Legend Golf Tournament, but the reason that we keep doing what we are doing is because of all of the people that reach out to us at the event and following, to share their own stories and let us know that it has helped them in some way. If we can ease one person’s struggle or keep one family from going through what we have all been through, we consider that a win! At Full Circle Foundation for Wellness, that’s exactly what we are striving for. Our mission for The Legend Golf Tournament is simple: to remember and honour Dallas and others who have lost their lives to suicide, as well as give support to the friends and family who love them. We also strive to promote awareness about mental health & suicide prevention, by educating others about the importance of mental health and removing the stigma of mental illness.

Our first two years have been a tremendous success, raising over $22, 000 for suicide prevention and mental health initiatives! Using funds raised at the tournament in 2016 & 2017 important strides towards our goal have been made! Last fall, through a partnership with the Safe Communities Committee – City of Brooks & County of Newell and Alberta Health Services, we were able to host a safeTALK Workshop workshop in our community as well as the first Suicide to Hope workshop in Southern Alberta! These workshops are an important step towards building a suicide safer community. Proceeds also helped our beneficiaries to offer valuable mental health services to Grasslands students and families, and deliver another successful Survivors of Suicide Loss Day. We have also continued the conversation about mental health and suicide in our community by partnering with local organizations to host a World Suicide Prevention Day BBQ & Yoga in the Park. We were also involved with our local Junior A Hockey team, the Brooks Bandits, and Grasslands Innovations to present the second annual Brooks Bandits Mental Health Night.

This year’s event will be hosted on July 14, 2018, at the Brooks Golf Club. The tournament is a 144 player scramble, a fun tournament with a competitive edge, just like Dallas! It brings friends, family, acquaintances and the community together for a relaxing day of fun in the sun, filled to the brim with hope, and positive energy. Again this year, there will be many opportunities for attendees to increase their knowledge about, as well as support our extremely deserving beneficiaries: CMHA Survivors of Suicide Loss Day and the Grasslands Leadership & Resiliency Program , a local mental health capacity building project operating in the public school system in the City of Brooks, which aims to provide youth with the tools necessary to build healthy and strong relationships, learn goal-setting, and coping strategies that will assist them in their transition into adulthood. Read more about their amazing story here: LRP The Modern Day Breakfast Club There will be a slight change to the tournament this year, with regards to the silent auction proceeds and an additional layer of support. The Full Circle Foundation and the major sponsors of the tournament have agreed to have a private third party, made up of friends of Dallas Williams, organize and run the 2018 silent auction and place the proceeds into trust for Dallas’s children. While all previous and current initiatives that are supported through this tournament can directly and indirectly positively impact the lives of those who have lost a loved one to suicide, the Foundation and sponsors felt it necessary to support the children in this specific way. While remembering and honouring our friend we are also sustaining those he left behind and giving them the courage to be the change.
