POSITION TITLE:               Community Navigator


PROGRAM:                         Operations – Counselling Department


POSITION TYPE:                Temporary, Full-time


POSITION SUMMARY:     Community Navigator will provide support, advocacy, and assistance to clients with system navigation through CMHA Calgary as well as referrals to other agencies and organizations.  Navigators will help clients identify resources that may be able to assist in supporting their mental health journey.


REPORTS TO:                        Counselling Lead



  • Be the point of contact and provide support to community members, CMHA Clients, and CMHA Staff to determine appropriate service referrals through the organization and/or to external organizations.
  • Responsible for Counselling intake, client set up, follow-up, while offering support for CMHA Calgary Counselling program.
  • Act as an advocate on behalf of individuals and/or provide support for self-advocacy.
  • Maintain program data entry in a manner that is timely and meets established agency standards, including client notes and survey data for all clients.
  • Participate as a CMHA Calgary representative in community partnerships committees (i.e. Community Connect YYC).
  • Maintain referral pathways and network of community partners.
  • Provide support for Counselling groups, events, and information sessions.
  • Act as a liaison for partner organizations to connect with about services and programs available to assist their clients through CMHA Calgary.
  • Ensure confidentiality of the community member accessing programs and services in accordance with FOIP and agency policies and procedures.


  • An undergraduate degree in a human services area (education, psychology, social work, nursing, sociology, recreation therapy).
  • Three years of related experience working in the mental health field is considered an asset.
  • Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) and previous experience working with individuals in crisis or experiencing suicidal feelings is required.
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) training, CPR and First Aid training are considered assets.
  • Thorough understanding of issues related to mental health and offering support for people with lived experience of mental health and/or addiction concerns.
  • Demonstration of strong collaborative and relationship-building skills with key stakeholders and community partners.
  • Cultural competency in working with diverse groups.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Zoom is required.
  • Able to engage in active listening, and provide and accept constructive feedback.
  • Effective conflict resolution, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Approachable, accessible, and facilitates cooperation.
  • Works effectively both independently and in a team environment.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills, with a high level of initiative and self-motivation.
