POSITION TITLE:            Program Facilitator

 

PROGRAM:                      Operations – Community Education Team

 

POSITION TYPE:            Casual/Relief

 

POSITION SUMMARY:  The Program Facilitator is responsible for the delivery of recovery-oriented and prevention-focused group sessions to a variety of target populations including youth, adults, and multicultural Calgarians. The Program Facilitator will deliver courses and learning sessions within CMHA Calgary’s Recovery College, YouthSMART, Adult Learning, and Workplace Education services. Facilitation will support individuals in building personal recovery and resiliency, will utilize contemporary prevention education strategies, and will result in an increased knowledge of mental health concepts and improved help-seeking behaviors amongst participants.

 

REPORTS TO:                     Program Manager – Community Education and Wellness

 

SERVICE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Co-facilitate group recovery, peer support, and skill-building courses for people living with mental health and/or substance use concerns, virtually or onsite at the CMHA Calgary Recovery College, and within various other local community service providers.
  • Deliver Community Education sessions, virtually or in-person, within junior and senior high schools, post-secondaries, workplaces, and community settings.
  • Promote mental health literacy, prevention, and recovery while empowering participants to live interdependently as part of a supportive, engaged community.
  • Monitor delivery effectiveness, identify necessary content adaptations in “real-time”, tailor activities to involve a variety of group sizes, and utilize established curriculum to meet the unique needs of targeted populations.
  • Maintain program data entry in a manner that is timely and meets established agency standards.
  • Provide occasional support for other programmatic offerings, community events, wellness fairs, and information sessions as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • An undergraduate degree in a human services area (education, psychology, social work, nursing, public health, sociology).
  • Three years related experience, or an equivalent combination.
  • Superior facilitation, engagement, and rapport building skills, with the ability to deliver learning to diverse groups with limited preparation time.
  • Thorough understanding of issues related to mental health education, community capacity building, resiliency, recovery, peer-support, and strategies for people with lived experience of mental health and/or addiction concerns.
  • Demonstration of strong collaborative and relationship-building skills with key stakeholders, participants, and community supporters.
  • Cultural competency in working with diverse groups.
  • Knowledge of principals of youth and adult engagement, with excellent group instruction techniques, classroom management strategies, and communication skills towards youth, emerging adults, and adult learners.
  • Exceptional skills for virtual facilitation, including knowledge surrounding the functions and operations of various online platforms, and adaptation of activities for virtual delivery.
  • A deep commitment to the recovery model, harm reduction philosophy, strengths based and empowerment approaches, along with solid upstream prevention and promotion thinking.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • A valid driver’s license, access to a reliable vehicle, and willingness to travel across Calgary and surrounding communities for session delivery is required.
  • Ability to work flexible shifts including daytime, evenings, and weekends is required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Zoom is required.
  • Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) and previous experience working with individuals in crisis or experiencing suicidal feelings is required.
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) training, CPR and First Aid training are considered assets.
  • Lived experience of mental health, and/or substance use concerns are considered assets.

  • Effective conflict resolution, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Approachable, accessible, and facilitates cooperation.
  • Works effectively both independently and in a team environment.
