Position Type:                   Part Time 21 Hours – Temporary (1 Year Term)

 

Hours of Work:                  Various Shifts

 

Position Summary:           The Recovery Trainer is responsible for the delivery of recovery orientated training and learning sessions to a variety of target a wide variety of groups including youth, seniors, indigenous and multicultural. Sessions will support resiliency and prevention education strategies, resulting in increased knowledge of mental health, addiction, trauma, and improved help-seeking skills. The position is also responsible for supporting the development of Recovery College curriculum.

 

Reports to:                            Recovery Team Lead

 

Service Responsibilities 

  • Provide group recovery and skills training sessions for people living with mental health and/or substance use in CMHA Calgary’s Recovery College.
  • Work jointly with a Peer Support Worker through session cofacilitation and codelivery.
  • Promote the recovery philosophy and empower people with skills to live interdependently as part of a supportive, engaged community.
  • Co-facilitate sessions, courses, learning services and drop in groups virtually, and in-person across all four quadrants of the city, and communities surrounding Calgary.
  • Remain current with new policies, services, resources and legislation applicable to the mental health/addiction community and recovery movement.
  • Assist with the development of engagement strategies with hard to reach and underserved groups including but not limited to; youth, seniors, indigenous and ethno-cultural groups.
  • Support evaluation and outcomes data related to programs delivered.
  • Work collaboratively with Content Designer/Developer and Recovery Team to update content and develop new training materials and sessions.
  • Adhere to the values and policies of CMHA Calgary.
  • Non-violent Crisis Intervention and ASIST training, or experience working with people in crisis or experiencing suicidal feelings/tendencies is considered an asset.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • An undergraduate degree in education, social service, health or business services field considered an asset.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of issues relating to supporting people with personal experience of mental health and/or substance use concerns.
  • Facilitation certification or experience, with the ability to facilitate sessions in a positive, engaging, interactive manner.
  • Three (3) years’ experience in the mental health/addiction and/or education field, with a deep commitment to and understanding of the recovery model and harm reduction.
  • Knowledge and experience in prevention, promotion, and engagement in mental health, demonstrating strong collaborative and relationship skills with key stakeholders.
  • Personal experience of a mental health and/or addiction issue would be considered an asset.
  • High level of initiative and self-motivation. Determined, action oriented and committed to excellence.
  • Recognizes and adheres to professional boundaries. Represents self and the agency in a professional manner.
  • Excellent public speaking, group facilitation, training and communication skills.
  • Positively contributes to work environment/culture.
  • Flexible, adaptable, and able to deliver sessions to groups with limited preparation time.
  • Responsiveness to sensitive questions/concerns and ability to navigate to the appropriate personnel involved, following or preceding a group session.

Additional Requirements

  • A valid driver’s license, access to a reliable vehicle, and willingness to travel across Calgary and surrounding communities for session delivery.
  • Ability to work flexible shifts, including both daytime and at least one evening shift per week, as well as occasional weekend shifts is required.
  • This job requires a mix of sitting, standing and moving, with a balance between computer-based work and verbal communication. The candidate may be required to balance priorities between different stakeholders.

The COVID-19 vaccination is a job requirement and a condition of employment. Offers of employment will be conditional upon proof of full immunization against COVID-19 with a Health Canada approved vaccine prior to the candidates’ start date.
