The Calgary Community Painters Society (CCPS) is pleased to announce a unique fundraising event, “Mosaic For a Cause”, in support of the Canadian Mental Health Association Calgary Region. The CCPS is a group of 80 local Calgary artists, founded in 1973. A not-for-profit organization, CCPS’s mission is to encourage the growth and development of Calgary’s artists through exhibitions, workshops and the exchange of artistic knowledge.
Our “Mosaic For a Cause” is a group painting project where many artists are re-creating two of Van Gogh’s Paintings: Vase with Red Poppies and Daisies and Garden at Arles. We have 50 artists participating, each of whom will be creating their own individual segment of the original painting which will then be assembled mosaic-style into one large finished piece. The finished works will be auctioned off in a silent auction at our art show, Palette, with 100% of the proceeds going to CMHA Calgary.
The reason we chose to embark on this fundraising project is to support the efforts of CMHA Calgary to increase the awareness of and support and treatment for individuals and families who are suffering from mental illness. Many studies point to a connection between creativity and mental illness. The reason we chose Vincent Van Gogh as our reference is that there seems to be a general consensus that one of the things Van Gogh suffered from was bipolar disorder. Many of Van Gogh’s symptoms can be detected through his biography and they may explain many of his actions.
Certainly, there are members of our group of artists who have suffered from mental illness or have family members and/or friends who have. In an effort to combat the social stigma around mental illness, we brought forward the idea of “Mosaic for a Cause” hoping that it would provide an opportunity open the dialogue around mental health and at the same time bring people together in a common cause that benefits our local community. The timing of our event is to ensure that our “Mosaic For A Cause” paintings are available for viewing prior to and following Mental Health Awareness Week (October 1 – 7).
The Mosaic paintings will be formally shown at our Palette Fine Art Show and Sale on Saturday, October 27th at the Triwood Community Association, 2244 Chicoutimi Drive NW, from 10 am to 4 pm. The Palette art show and sale features paintings by many independent artists in a variety of mediums including acrylic, oil, watercolour and mixed media. The winning bid will be chosen at the Palette art show however the bidder does NOT have to be present and will be contacted personally.
