A Powerful Moment from Road to Recovery

At CMHA Calgary’s Recovery College, the Road to Recovery class offers a space where participants can explore what recovery means to them while building connection, purpose, and hope.

During a recent session, one participant shared their personal definition of recovery:

“For me, it’s the process of learning to live again while managing all the complexities of my mental health journey, believing I can have a future again and that I can survive.”

This participant has been attending the class for some time, typically keeping their camera off and remaining quiet. Their decision to speak so openly marked a significant personal step and reflected the trust they have built in the group.

They have described several reasons why the program is meaningful to them. Attending regularly provides a sense of structure and purpose each week. It has also helped them feel less isolated and more connected to others who understand their experiences. The safe and supportive environment has allowed them to gradually share their thoughts and feelings, leading to opportunities for growth, learning, and deeper understanding.

Moments like this demonstrate the profound impact of peer-led education and community support. Road to Recovery, like all programs at Recovery College, is built on the belief that hope and healing are possible when people feel understood, supported, and empowered in their own journey.
