Community LAMDA Society Joins Forces with CMHA Calgary to Expand Supportive Housing for Mental Health
Jan 17, 2025
Calgary, Alberta – January 17, 2025
The Canadian Mental Health Association, Calgary Region (CMHA Calgary), is proud to announce the acquisition of Community LAMDA Society (LAMDA), effective January 1, 2025. This strategic merger represents a critical step forward in addressing the growing need for comprehensive mental health support and housing in Calgary.
Since 1987, LAMDA has provided essential supportive housing for adults living with mental illness, managing two affordable housing buildings in partnership with Calgary Housing Company. As LAMDA’s working Board planned its retirement, CMHA Calgary recognized an opportunity to not only continue LAMDA’s legacy but also to expand its ability to fill gaps in the continuum of care for individuals living with mental illness.
“This partnership reflects our shared vision of a Calgary where everyone has access to the housing and supports they need to thrive,” said Linda McLean, Executive Director of CMHA Calgary. “The integration of LAMDA allows us to grow our housing portfolio, strengthen our reach, and patch critical gaps in mental health supports for vulnerable individuals in our community.”
Key Points of the Acquisition:
- Growth in Housing Services: CMHA Calgary will add two supportive housing buildings with 62 affordable units, expanding our housing portfolio and increasing access to safe, stable, and affordable housing.
- Seamless Transition for Residents: A 24-month continuity plan ensures minimal disruption for LAMDA residents while integrating them into CMHA Calgary’s broader housing program.
- Enhanced Support System: LAMDA’s outreach-based supports will be aligned with CMHA Calgary’s current apartment program to create a more robust network of care.
- Strengthening Partnerships: This merger builds upon CMHA Calgary’s strategic relationship with Calgary Housing Company, creating opportunities for future growth in supportive housing.
The acquisition aligns with CMHA Calgary’s strategic objectives to meet the growing demand for housing and support services and reinforces its commitment to closing gaps in mental health care for underserved populations. By absorbing LAMDA’s operations, assets, and dedicated staff, CMHA Calgary is ensuring that individuals living with mental illness continue to receive the high-quality care they deserve.
“We are committed to working collaboratively to create a seamless continuum of mental health care that addresses not only housing but also the comprehensive support needs of our community,” McLean added.
Together, CMHA Calgary and LAMDA are building a stronger, more inclusive Calgary where no one is left behind.
