Empowering Mental Wellness: A Partnership Between CMHA Calgary and YMCA Calgary
Mar 14, 2025
At CMHA Calgary, we believe that mental health education is a crucial part of overall well-being. As awareness of mental health continues to grow, so does the need for accessible programs that foster education, resilience, and community support. One initiative that embodies this mission is Recovery College, a program we proudly offer across multiple YMCA Calgary locations. Recovery College provides free, community-based courses designed to help individuals build their own resourcefulness and take charge of their mental health and wellness.
As we celebrate the expansion of Recovery College to the southwest, we wanted to take a moment to highlight this meaningful collaboration. Our very own Ashley Lamantia, Senior Manager of Community Education and Wellness Initiatives at CMHA Calgary, recently sat down with YMCA Calgary to discuss the impact of this program, the power of education in mental wellness, and the importance of partnerships like this one.

YMCA: Ashley, can you introduce yourself and tell us about the CMHA Recovery College program?
Ashley: “Hi, I’m Ashley, and I’ve been with CMHA Calgary for nearly 15 years. My background is in education, and I also have lived experience with mental health. I oversee community-based mental health education programs for both youth and adults.
One of our most impactful programs is Recovery College, which we are thrilled to offer at YMCA locations across Calgary. This program is open to individuals aged 16 and up, with no referral or diagnosis required. Our focus is on helping participants build resilience, develop self-care strategies, and improve their mental health literacy in a supportive learning environment. We want to make mental health education accessible to everyone.
YMCA: Could you share a story of someone who benefited from participating in the Recovery College program?
Ashley: “Absolutely! We recently had a participant who had been struggling with anxiety for years. They often felt overwhelmed and unsure of how to cope. After attending our Mindfulness and Mental Health course, they learned simple but effective strategies, like breathing exercises and grounding techniques, that became essential tools in their daily life.
Beyond the skills they gained, they also spoke about the importance of the supportive environment created by our facilitators—many of whom have lived experience themselves. Knowing they weren’t alone in their journey made all the difference. These are the moments that remind us why education, combined with compassion, can be so transformative.”
YMCA: What makes Recovery College unique compared to other mental wellness programs?
Ashley: “At Recovery College, we take an educational approach rather than a traditional support group model. We believe that mental health is something that can be learned and strengthened, just like any other aspect of well-being.
Our facilitators act as guides rather than lecturers, and we encourage participants to learn from one another. A key part of our program is Peer Support—many of our facilitators have lived experience with mental health or substance use challenges, which makes learning more relatable and engaging. By shifting the focus from treatment to education and empowerment, we help individuals take an active role in their own wellness journey.”
YMCA: What outcomes can participants expect after enrolling in Recovery College?
Ashley: “Participants often walk away with a renewed sense of hope, self-awareness, and confidence. They gain practical tools to manage difficult situations and make healthier choices, even in tough moments. Many also find a deeper sense of belonging, as they connect with others who share similar experiences.
Beyond emotional balance and resiliency, participants increase their mental health literacy, giving them the knowledge to better support themselves and their loved ones. It’s all about finding what works best for each person on their journey.”
YMCA: Why did CMHA Calgary choose to partner with the YMCA on this program?
Ashley: “We were excited to partner with the YMCA because of its longstanding reputation as a trusted, accessible community hub.
Many individuals facing mental health challenges encounter barriers to accessing support, whether due to stigma, lack of awareness, or physical accessibility. The YMCA provides a welcoming space where people already feel comfortable and supported. We also recognize the strong connection between physical and mental health, and by offering these programs in YMCA locations, we’re able to bring wellness full circle.
This partnership has allowed us to reach new audiences and extend mental health education beyond our traditional spaces. We couldn’t be more grateful for this collaboration.”
YMCA: What would you say to someone who is considering joining but might feel unsure?
Ashley: “If you’re thinking about joining but feel uncertain, I encourage you to take the first step and give it a try! Our courses are designed for anyone aged 16+, no matter where you are on your mental health journey.
When you attend a course, you’ll find a welcoming and supportive environment where participation is entirely up to you. There’s no pressure—just a space to learn, connect, and explore new strategies for well-being. Many participants tell us that they were hesitant at first but left feeling empowered and more in control of their mental health.”
YMCA: Where can people find more information or sign up for Recovery College?
Ashley: “To learn more about Recovery College and other mental health programs we offer, visit our website at CMHA Calgary. We are so excited to continue working alongside the YMCA to make mental health education more accessible and to create a stronger, healthier community together.”
The partnership between CMHA Calgary’s Recovery College and YMCA Calgary is built on the belief that everyone deserves access to the tools, education, and support needed to take charge of their mental wellness.
