Finding Peace and Purpose: A Client’s Journey to a Buddhist Retreat
Aug 26, 2025
For the past three years, a client in CMHA Calgary’s Bob Ward Apartment Program has been building stability and independence while managing a diagnosis of schizophrenia. With the right combination of supports, medication, and personal commitment, his mental health has remained steady and he has been able to live independently.
An important part of his life is his Buddhist faith. For many years, he has practiced with dedication, finding peace and meaning in his spiritual community. Recently, he was offered the opportunity to serve as a groundskeeper at a Buddhist retreat in Upstate New York. This role would allow him to contribute to the retreat’s upkeep while participating in the program at no cost.
Encouraged by a Buddhist friend and mentor who will also be attending, he applied for the position and was accepted. Determined to make it happen, he saved enough money to pay for his flight and planned for a six-week stay during the summer.
This experience represents much more than travel. It offers the chance to deepen his spiritual practice, connect with others who share his values, and participate in a supportive community. If all goes well, there is even the possibility of being invited back in future years.
Stories like this reflect CMHA Calgary’s commitment to supporting individuals not only in meeting their daily needs, but also in pursuing meaningful goals that bring purpose, joy, and connection.
