From Struggle to Strength: Mohamad’s Journey in Supportive Living

When Mohamad first arrived in Canada from Syria, he faced immense challenges.

The effects of war in his homeland, combined with family conflict, financial strain, language barriers, and social isolation, made the transition to a new life extremely difficult.

Eight months ago, Mohamad was experiencing a period of significant struggle. He was navigating depression, self-harm behaviors, missed psychiatric appointments, and recent hospitalizations.

Through the consistent, compassionate support of his Supportive Living Coordinator at CMHA Calgary’s Horizon 8 Apartment Program, part of the Supportive Living Apartments, Mohamad began to take small but meaningful steps forward. Personal goals were set, connections to mental health supports were re-established, and participation in community activities such as gardening provided both purpose and a sense of belonging.

In the past four months, Mohamad has celebrated several important milestones. He has remained free from self-harm behaviors, returned to regular psychiatric care, found part-time employment, and begun having open conversations with his family about mental health and finances.

Mohamad’s journey reflects resilience, determination, and the power of community-based mental health support. His continued engagement in the Horizon 8 Apartment Program marks an important step forward in his recovery and his integration into the community.
