When Community Steps Up: How Local Fundraising Supports Mental Health
Jul 31, 2026
Some of the most meaningful support for mental health begins with a simple idea: bring people together and give them a way to make a difference.
Community fundraising can take many forms. It might be a golf tournament, a workplace campaign, a community event, a fitness challenge or a personal fundraiser inspired by someone’s own connection to mental health. These initiatives are organized by local businesses, groups and individuals, but their impact reaches directly into CMHA Calgary’s programs and services.
The funds raised are important, but community-led events do more than generate donations. They open conversations, introduce new people to available supports and help make mental health part of everyday community life. They also remind us that supporting mental health is something we can all take part in.
One longstanding example is the Bluestar Invitational Golf Tournament. On August 26, golfers, sponsors and community partners will come together for the sixth annual tournament in support of CMHA Calgary. Over the past six years, Bluestar Engineering Ltd. and it’s tournament partners has raised more than $250,000.00 to help strengthen mental health supports in our community.
Funds raised through the tournament help support CMHA Calgary programs and services, including peer support, mental health education, in-person workshops and free online learning resources. These supports help individuals and families build knowledge, develop practical coping skills and find connection at different points in their mental health journeys.
“Supporting CMHA Calgary reflects Bluestar’s commitment to the well-being of our employees, clients, and communities. This tournament is a meaningful opportunity to help break the stigma around mental health while supporting an important cause,” said Chris Keeley, General Manager at Bluestar Engineering Ltd.
Bluestar’s commitment shows what can happen when an organization makes mental health part of how it engages its employees, partners and wider community. It is one example of the many creative ways people can turn an existing event or a new idea into meaningful support.
Whether it is a large annual tournament or a small first-time fundraiser, every community initiative helps extend the conversation and connect more people with CMHA Calgary. Just as importantly, each event is shaped by the people behind it, making community fundraising a personal and authentic way to support mental health.
