13th Annual Survivors of Suicide Loss Day – Jayna’s Story

13th Annual Survivors of Suicide Loss Day – Jayna’s Story

Every 40 seconds, someone, somewhere in the world dies by suicide. In Alberta, 500 people die by suicide a year, with men four times as likely to kill themselves as women. Those who knew and loved them are faced with a complex and often confusing grief process. We know between six and 10 people are directly affected by each of these devastating and often heavily stigmatized losses.

Each November, survivors of suicide loss gather around the world to gain community, healing and hope at the Survivors of Suicide Loss Day. Calgary’s 13th Annual event, hosted by Canadian Mental Health Association – Calgary Region, will be held at the The Palace Theatre (219 – 8 Avenue SW), November 4, 2017. Register here.

After her dad’ s passing, Jayna has been trying to become more active to raise more awareness towards mental health and suicide prevention. Jayna has attended workshops as well as individual and group counselling. This will be Jayna’s third time attending SOSL Day. Jayna strongly believes that if she shares her story she could potentially help someone who has been through a similar situation.
