Drop-in & Therapy Groups

Family and friends often have a difficult time coping and wonder how best to help a relative or friend with a mental health or substance use concern. Through our Counselling Drop-in and Therapy Groups, we offer support and resources to aid family members in maximizing in their ability to assist their loved ones, individuals struggling with a death and non-death grief and loss, and a loss by suicide, all while staying balanced in the process.

Suicide Bereavement Drop-in

Our Suicide Bereavement Drop-in group, facilitated by a peer volunteer survivor and a CMHA Calgary counsellor, supports individuals through their loss in a safe and confidential environment, where they can create connections with others to develop a network of support.

This group is held weekly on Thursdays, from 6:30 – 8:30 pm. Participation is free and currently taking place online over Zoom. To receive the Zoom link, please register here.

Life After Loss Therapy Group 

The Life after Loss group, facilitated by experienced CMHA Calgary counsellors, provides individuals the opportunity to explore their grief on a new level in a safe and supportive environment. Individuals will receive knowledge about the grief process in an environment they can create connections with others to develop a network of support.

Groups take place once a week over an 8-week period, several times per year. Fees are based on a sliding scale. No one is refused service due to financial reasons. Registration and previous one-on-one sessions with one of our counsellors are required.

This group will be held every Wednesday from October 24 – December 15, 2021, from 6 – 8 pm. To join, please register here.

Capable Carers Therapy Group

Capable Carers, led by a CMHA Calgary counsellor, offers a safe nonjudgmental environment that uses a psycho-educational and practical approach for those family members to learn coping skills and the capacity to support others while understanding the tools to help decrease burnout for themselves. This group discusses self-care, boundaries, communication, grief and loss, crisis recovery, etc. Participants can openly discuss and share experiences, empathetically connect with others, and create a sense of hope. The group environment provides an opportunity for connection to others, decreased feelings of isolation, and increased feelings of hope.
