Calgary Public Teachers and The Alberta Teachers’ Association are proud to support the work done by the Canadian Mental Health Association. We have aligned ourselves with the Canadian Mental Health Association because we believe in the work that they are doing. Good mental health is a cause that is near and dear to our hearts since it is something that affects us all- teachers, students, parents, staff, families, and the community at large. In order for each of us to live our best lives, it is vital that we take care of ourselves—both physically and mentally.
As teachers, we recognize that mental health issues often begin in the developmental years and that early detection can be instrumental in developing skills and strategies for lifelong success. Children and youth are often undiagnosed, or misdiagnosed, for far too long, which can impact their self-esteem, learning, and overall achievement. We want to be a part of helping the CMHA continue to implement programs that benefit our students, their families, our community at large, and even our colleagues.
As part of our culture of education, we frequently engage students, colleagues, and families in conversations about mental health and wellness, and also steer them towards available resources. Every year Mental Health Week is acknowledged and celebrated throughout our organizations by sharing resources, lessons, and activities that bring the topic of mental health to the forefront. This year many of our schools will participate in Hats On for Mental Health on May 3rd to show their support and raise awareness of the importance of good mental health. Students will also learn about positive self-talk, asking for help when they need it, and about the importance of managing stress, or recognizing when things may be too difficult to handle on their own.
We are excited to be hosting our 3rd annual Mental Health Awareness Night at the Kilkenny Pub (3630 Brentwood Rd NW, Calgary) from 7:00-10:30pm on Saturday, May 6, 2017. At this event, teachers, friends, and general members of the public are welcome to join us as we highlight awareness about mental health and raise funds for CMHA to continue the important work that they do to support our local community. Our past two events have raised approximately $15,000 and we look forward to adding to that total this year.
During our event, we will have trivia games, a 50/50 ticket raffle, a silent auction, and many amazing door prizes that will be given away to lucky attendees. Tickets are $25 and include a steak sandwich dinner (a vegetarian option is available), a beverage of choice, and many opportunities to win prizes. Our goal is for people to get together, spend time socializing, and enjoying each other’s company, while we raise money for a great organization.
