Day 9: Because even the brain needs an off-season #NowImStronger

This year in Calgary, SAIT, Ambrose University, and St. Mary’s University, will all be participating in the Make Some Noise campaign in different ways. Beginning Jan 15th to February 13th, each institution will bring their own spin to the campaign to break the stigma around mental health and promote resources on campuses and in the Calgary area.

This couldn’t be truer from a student-athlete perspective. In fact, any athlete at any level can probably relate to the above comment. They are trained to play through the pain, be tough and to push emotions aside.

Student-athletes are under pressure all year round. From classes to late night study sessions after practice, road games, training, all while trying to maintain somewhat of a social life, these young men and women often tend to forget to take the time to take care of themselves mentally. They are constantly on the go and when it finally slows down, they are exhausted both mentally and physically.

The impact of ‘Make Some Noise for Mental Health,’ an initiative originally created by the SAIT Trojans Outreach Program in 2015, was colossal. The involvement and enthusiasm from the student-athletes on campus spoke volumes as to why this campaign was created and why it is needed.

“I feel it’s important to raise awareness especially because I have personally been affected by two people who didn’t reach out for help.”
– Cora, SAIT Trojans women’s hockey

“More students should be aware of the services available to them. Athletes should be aware of it too.”
– Jon, SAIT Trojans men’s volleyball

“This is a very misunderstood issue among youth these days. Without the support and knowledge that events like this bring, it’s much more difficult to face alone.”
– Mikael, 2015 SAIT Trojans men’s hockey grad

“Make Some Noise for mental health helped raise awareness and support those who are struggling with mental illness but feel uncomfortable or embarrassed to go see someone.”
– Danika, 2015 SAIT Trojan women’s volleyball grad

Since the topic hit home for so many SAIT student-athletes, the campaign was adopted by all 17 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) schools for 2016 to Make Some Noise across Alberta for mental health.
