Finding Purpose in Connection: Nikolai’s Journey to Joy and Belonging
This inspiring story of resilience and renewal underscores the transformative impact of CMHA Calgary’s Continuing Connections program, where a sense of purpose and hope is rediscovered.
Meet Nikolai*, a 72-year-old resident who joined CMHA Calgary’s Continuing Connections program in December 2023. Nikolai had recently begun withdrawing from the group activities he once enjoyed, a stark contrast to his earlier life spent in the comfort of his family home. Adjusting to long-term care was a significant transition for him, stirring unfamiliar feelings of isolation and uncertainty. Despite his resilience in managing mental health and physical challenges over the years, this new chapter presented fresh obstacles that called for support and connection.
The Continuing Connections team began supporting Nikolai through one-on-one activities, offering a safe and welcoming space for him to share his thoughts and concerns. Over time, Nikolai opened up about how deeply he missed the sense of purpose he once found in helping others. He spoke warmly of his years as a volunteer, reflecting on the joy and belonging it brought to his life.
Inspired by Nikolai’s passion for giving back, the Continuing Connections team helped him rediscover a sense of purpose. With their encouragement, Nikolai began volunteering at the care center’s craft cabin, where he now organizes art supplies for teachers and assists fellow residents with their creative projects. Occasionally, he even joins in the art-making himself, finding renewed joy and fulfillment.
Nikolai’s new role has had a transformative effect on his life. Volunteering has not only restored the sense of purpose he deeply missed but has also helped him build meaningful connections with fellow residents and staff. As he became more involved, Nikolai grew more comfortable expressing his emotions. He now recognizes when he’s struggling and proactively seeks support, fostering open and effective communication with his caregiving team.
Nikolai’s journey highlights the profound impact of the Continuing Connections program. Created to support individuals aged 18 to 65+ living in long-term care, the program empowers clients to overcome feelings of hopelessness and isolation by fostering confidence, rebuilding relationships, and cultivating hope for the future.
Thanks to the generosity of donors and supporters, programs like Continuing Connections enable individuals like Nikolai to rediscover purpose and joy, even in the face of challenges. Together, we’re building lives filled with meaning, connection, and hope.
