Joan’s Journey: From Isolation to Independence with CMHA Calgary
Discover how CMHA Calgary’s Independent Living Support program helped Joan overcome mobility challenges, reclaim her independence, and rebuild connections, showcasing the life-changing impact of your support.
Meet Joan*, a 70-year-old Calgarian who faced significant challenges with mobility, isolation, and managing her home. When her therapist referred her to the Canadian Mental Health Association – Calgary Region (CMHA Calgary), Joan began a transformative journey with the Independent Living Support (ILS) program, rediscovering her independence and rebuilding connections.
Joan’s first priority was accessing Calgary Transit Access, an essential service for her mobility needs. After her initial application was denied, the ILS coordinator stepped in to provide hands-on support. They guided Joan through the appeals process, even advocating on her behalf during a hearing outside regular work hours. With their help, Joan’s application was approved, restoring her ability to connect with her community.
With transportation no longer a barrier, Joan turned her focus to other goals, including creating a more supportive living environment. Her cluttered kitchen was a significant source of stress, so the ILS coordinator referred her to a specialized decluttering program. With this assistance, Joan was able to transform her space into a functional and calming home.
Over the next year and a half, Joan met with her ILS coordinator every two weeks. Together, they worked on practical tasks like submitting medical and dental invoices through the Alberta Seniors Benefits program and engaging in activities that supported her emotional well-being. Walking through her neighborhood and visiting the mall became meaningful ways for Joan to stay active and reduce feelings of isolation.
As Joan’s progress continued, the ILS team identified additional resources to support her long-term mental health. They helped her transition to a geriatric mental health program, ensuring she had access to specialized care tailored to her needs.
Reflecting on her experience, Joan expressed deep gratitude for the guidance, care, and advocacy she received from CMHA Calgary.
