Fitness, Fun, and Fundraising: Train the Trainer Event Supports CMHA Calgary
On September 21, Calgary’s fitness community came together for an unforgettable event; the very first Train the Trainer, hosted by Kevin Smith from Grin and Bear It Fitness. Over 30 independent fitness professionals joined forces and gathered at Evolve Strength Sunridge, all with one mission in mind — raising much-needed funds to support the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Calgary. In total, the event raised over $8,000 to help fund essential mental health programs.
Reflecting on the day, Kevin shared his excitement “seeing everyone come out, have fun, and put their money (or body) where their mouth is — it’s incredible. And when people started saying, ‘Let’s do this again next year,’ I knew we had something special.”
The event was all about community. From volunteers and fitness pros to local vendors and organizations donating to the silent auction, the whole day was a collaborative effort, with one shared goal, supporting mental health in Calgary. And the event wasn’t just about fitness — it was about making a difference.
The day was packed with challenges that brought out the competitive spirit and a lot of laughs. From pulling commercial trucks with just body weight to deadlifting hundreds of pounds, there was something for everyone. Kevin even took a seat in the dunk tank, where participants were eager to see him take the plunge—all in good fun, and all for a great cause.
What stood out most was the energy and enthusiasm of people from all walks of life, coming together to raise money for CMHA Calgary. Whether it was their first time attending or they were seasoned fitness enthusiasts, everyone had a part to play in this important cause.
Funds raised go directly to CMHA Calgary, helping support a variety of mental health programs, from education and peer support to workshops and online resources. These services are vital for individuals and families navigating the challenges of mental health and addiction, and events like this help keep these resources available to those who need them.
For many present, the connection between fitness and mental health was personal. Participant Marlon Wilson said “movement changes your perspective. Even if nothing physically changes, exercising gives you a shift in mindset — it makes you believe that you’ll find a way through. Supporting this event was a no-brainer for me.”
As the day came to a close, it was clear this first-ever Train the Trainer event was more than just a fundraiser — it was a celebration of community, resilience, and the power of coming together for a cause. We’re already looking forward to what next year will bring!
