YOUR NEXT OPPORTUNITY

Reporting to the Team Lead - Peer and Recovery Recreation Services the Peer Support Mentor will be responsible for modelling excellence to our Peer Support Workers and will help develop each of the core competencies required to elevate the service delivery model of Peer Support services. You are viewed as a role model to our internal Peer Services staff and students through their mental health journey and their Peer Support practice.

Who YOU ARE

The Peer Support Mentor will provide ongoing mentorship and role-modeling for internal Peer Services staff and Peer students, utilizing an established strength-based approach. Support the mentorship and training of internal School of Peer Support practicum students in collaboration with Team Lead.

Develop and facilitate a monthly ‘Community of Practice’ for CMHA Calgary Peer Support Workers. While working in collaboration with the Team Lead, research, draft and maintain manuals for Peer delivered services.

Participate in coalition building and networking with community groups, committees, and individuals to address common needs and issues and to further the Peer Support movement. (monthly/bi-monthly). Provide intra-agency presentations on Peer Support, community resources, CMHA services and the value of Peer Support. (occasionally/upon demand)

Promote the Peer Support philosophy and empower people through their recovery journey, as measured by the Recovery Assessment Scale (RAS).

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Completion of the CMHA Calgary School of Peer Support OR other formal Peer Support training required.
  • A minimum of three years’ experience as a Peer Support Worker (paid or volunteer) working with individuals and caregivers on mental health challenges or addiction concerns.
  • Previous Peer Support mentorship experience and/or certification through Peer Support Canada is considered a key asset.
  • Thorough understanding and ability to demonstrate effective Peer practice, Peer Support competencies, appropriate Peer conduct, and how to utilize own lived experience to contribute to an individual’s learning and growth.
  • Excellent public speaking, group facilitation, training, and communication skills.
  • Responsiveness to sensitive questions/concerns and the ability to navigate to the appropriate personnel involved, following or preceding the delivery of services.
  • Respect for confidentiality and ethical considerations.
  • Willingness to participate in ongoing training and professional development.
  • Excellent public speaking, group facilitation, training, and communication skills.
  • Data entry skills required to maintain program statistics for purposes of evaluation and research.
  • Current Applied Suicide Intervention Skills (ASIST) certification and current First Aid and CPR certifications.

Additional requirements

  • A valid driver’s license, access to a reliable vehicle, and willingness to travel across Calgary and surrounding communities for service delivery.
  • This position is scheduled on shifts that occur primarily in-person during weekdays. Daytime and evening availability is required. The successful applicant will occasionally be required to work weekends.
  • Ability to be adaptable to the role’s mix of sitting, standing and moving, with a balance between computer-based work and verbal communication. The candidate may be required to balance priorities between different stakeholders.

Employment type

  • Permanent Full Time (35 hours per week)

Shift Schedule

  • This is an in-person position that is scheduled on shifts occurring primarily during weekdays. Daytime and evening availability is required. The successful applicant will occasionally be required to work weekends.
  • A minimum of two shifts per month is required to remain active as a Peer Support Worker.
