Calgary Hitmen Hosts the First #TalkToday Game
On Friday, February 24, 2017, The Calgary Hitmen host the first #TalkToday game as they play the Medicine Hat Tigers.
Canadian Mental Health Association – Calgary Region and the Calgary Hitmen have teamed up to raise awareness about the importance of mental health. This initiative is part of #TalkToday, a joint Canadian Mental Health Association and Western Hockey League project that aims to promote the mental health of young athletes and raise awareness about suicide and suicide prevention.
“We’re extremely grateful to partner with the Calgary Hitmen to host Talk Today to increase public awareness and to promote mental health in this community,” said Laureen MacNeil, Executive Director of CMHA – Calgary Region. “The Calgary Hitmen players and coaches are seen as leaders in the Calgary community. Through their leadership and initiative in completing the Talk Today program, not only will the players and coaches be encouraged to speak openly about mental health and suicide, those who look up to the Hitmen will know that they are not alone if they are struggling.”
A key piece of the Talk Today program has been to educate players about mental health and suicide prevention. CMHA – Calgary Region has been working with Calgary Hitmen players and coaches to provide mental health education. The team is now linked to a CMHA Mental Health Coach who can provide support and mental health resources to those individuals in need.
