No Decision Yet on Supervised Drug Sites as Province Announces New Funding for Mental Health

The Recovery College program promoted by Luan Friday was launched last year in Calgary before being rapidly expanded to Edmonton and Wood Buffalo. Friday’s announcement means the program will now be expanded to additional locations in Lethbridge and Red Deer this September.

The Recovery College model combines peer-support and free courses on a wide variety of topics including sleep, personal boundaries, money basics and substance use recovery.

“We looked at models around the world and copied the best from the best and said, ‘Can we make it better?’” said Laureen MacNeil, executive director of CMHA in Calgary. “(This) is the first provincial government in Canada to scale Recovery College, which is a very innovative, cost-effective prevention, (health) promotion and recovery model. I applaud (the Alberta) government for being a national leader in this space as well.”
