Our world, and our day-to-day activities, have drastically changed in the past few weeks. The COVID-19 pandemic has effected every single person in our city, and in an era of physical distancing it may also effect one’s mental health. While as a community we have been instructed to physically distance from each other, we want to make sure not to mentally distancing from our loved ones and the Calgary community. As a supporter of Canadian Mental Health Association – Calgary Region (CMHA Calgary), our organization wanted to let you know what we have been doing to provide continued mental health support in our community.
CMHA Calgary’s first and foremost concern is too keep our clients and staff healthy and safe. We closed our doors to the public on March 12, but quickly moved our Peer Support and Counselling services to be accessed virtually through phone and email. If you feel the need at all to reach out for support, please do, and leave a message – a friendly voice will phone you back!

Our educational sessions on coping strategies and wellness tips for corporate and community groups are now available virtually. In the coming weeks, Recovery College courses will be delivered online to continue group education and resiliency skill building during COVID-19. Over the past few months, CMHA Calgary staff have been exploring the delivery of online courses as an additional channel of support to the community. The reality of COVID-19 has increased not only the timeline of online delivery, but also our need for different types technology.
We have also focused on keeping our clients who reside in our Supportive Living Homes and Apartments safe and healthy. Under the guidance of Alberta Health Services, we have implemented a number of changes to processes and procedures in relation to cleaning, food handling, and transition in and out of each of our homes. We are so thankful that a number of our employees from different departments have stepped up to assist in the added roles and responsibilities required in our Supportive Living Homes during this time.
We have gathered supplies (masks, gloves, personal protective equipment, sanitizer, etc.) to make sure everyone feels safe to come to work, and ultimately to provide mental health support for our clients. We are extremely grateful for all the employees at CMHA Calgary who have gone above and beyond during this pandemic. We couldn’t do it without each and every one of them.
