Join The Buddy Up Challenge

Buddy Up is a campaign by the Centre for Suicide Prevention, informed by an advisory committee and vetted by all-male focus groups. CMHA Calgary is a proud partner and Champion of Buddy Up.

Buddy Up is a men’s suicide prevention campaign: a call to action for men, by men to help a buddy struggling with thoughts of suicide. Buddy Up teaches men how to help their friends who may be struggling with thoughts of suicide in four simple steps.

In Canada, men have a suicide rate three times higher than women. Why? We have socialized men to be strong, stoic and self-reliant; showing emotion is a sign of weakness, as is asking for help. Further, men are underserved by our traditional health and social service sectors. Men are dying in alarming numbers, all around us, alone. We can change this reality.

Guys, here’s what you can do:

  • Pay attention to signs that your buddy is struggling
  • Start a conversation with them
  • Keep it going by asking them questions and listening
  • Stick to your role – connect your buddy to help and check-in to show your support

This campaign needs Champions like you to help spread the word that men’s suicide is preventable. When you become a Champion, you have access to all kinds of free, fun swag like Buddy Up air fresheners, stickers and posters!
